Last Name Generators is a free tool for finding surnames. It suggests real last names from dozens of cultures, plus original fantasy and genre names, and shows the meaning of every name so you can choose one that fits.
What the site does
Most surname generators return a bare list of names. This one pairs every surname with its meaning and origin, and shows the native script for languages that use one, such as Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and the scripts of India. Filters let you choose the first letter, last letter, length and how common a name should be.
The site is used by novelists and screenwriters naming characters, game masters naming whole villages of NPCs, parents testing how a surname sounds with a first name, developers who need realistic placeholder names, and people curious about what their own family name means.
Where the names come from
The real-world lists are compiled from publicly available surname references: national frequency lists and census publications, historical records and standard etymological dictionaries of surnames. Each entry records the surname, a short meaning, a rough popularity band and, where relevant, the native spelling.
The fantasy, wizarding-style and space-opera lists are original. They were written for this site, avoid names from existing books, films and games, and are free to use in any project.
The lists are assembled with the help of software tools and then checked for duplicates, formatting and consistency. Etymology is not an exact science, and a short meaning cannot capture every regional variant of a name, so treat the meanings as a helpful starting point rather than a genealogical record.
Corrections and new origins
If you spot a wrong meaning, a misspelling or a name that belongs to a different culture, please tell us. Corrections that include a source are the quickest to check and fix. Requests for new origins and name styles are welcome too.
Fast, free and private
The site is a set of static pages served from a global content delivery network, so it loads quickly on any connection. Names are generated in your browser. Nothing you type into the generator is sent to a server, and names you save stay in your own browser. The site is free to use and may show advertising to cover its costs. The privacy policy explains what that involves.
The generator, the origin pages and these site pages are available in English, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Portuguese, Korean and Italian. The themed generators and last name lists are in English only, and surname meanings are shown in English.
