Naming a whole family, not one character

A family name has to do more work than a single character's surname. It appears on a crest, a house, a shop sign and a gravestone, and it has to sound right for grandparents and grandchildren alike. Start by deciding what the family is known for: land, trade, faith, war or scandal. The meaning shown with each result helps. A merchant family called Kaufmann, from the German for merchant, or a farming family called Bauer tells the reader something before the story begins.

Next, think about the branches. Real families split into cousins, in laws and emigrant lines whose names change spelling in new countries, so a German Schmidt family might have American Smiths two generations later. Generating several names from the same origin gives you believable in laws, neighbours and rivals. Use the origin filter to keep a region consistent, and the popularity filter to decide whether the family is ordinary or unusual.

Houses, dynasties and factions with the family name generator

For a noble house or fictional dynasty, the name is also a banner. Real royal houses were named after land, founders and castles, and you can follow the same pattern. Pull a place name from the generator and add House of in front, or pick a name whose meaning suggests a symbol for the coat of arms. A house called Ashford could take an ash tree, while a Falk or Falcone family practically designs its own shield.

Game factions need names that are short, distinct and easy to remember at a glance. Choose names with different first letters and different lengths so players do not confuse them on a map or a scoreboard, and avoid two factions that share an ending. The letter and length filters make this quick. For a clan system, pick one origin, such as Scottish or Japanese, and generate enough names to fill the map.

When the family name comes first

In China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Hungary, the family name is written before the given name. Wang Fang is Fang of the Wang family, and in Hungarian the composer Bartók Béla is Béla Bartók in English order. The generator shows these names in their native script, such as 王 for Wang or 佐藤 for Satō, so you can see how the family name leads on a document, a door plate or a family register.

Some of these cultures also concentrate many people under a few names. Kim, Lee and Park cover a large part of Korea, and families distinguish themselves by a clan seat called bon-gwan, so the Gimhae Kim and the Gyeongju Kim are different lineages. Nguyễn is borne by roughly two in five Vietnamese, and people there are usually addressed by their given name rather than the family name. These details make a family in fiction feel accurate rather than generic.
