Pick one style for a single people or mix them for a whole continent. The letter and length filters help you control the result: a short name fits a game interface, while a long one gives a noble character some weight. Every name is original, written for this site rather than taken from Tolkien, a tabletop setting or any video game, so you can use it without borrowing someone else's world.

Turning a meaning into a history

The meaning beside each name is the most useful part of the tool. Wintermere means lords of the frozen lake, which suggests a northern house with a castle on the ice. Ravensworn, sworn beneath the raven banner, hints at an oath and an old war. Cedarholm, island of tall cedars, gives you a place, a trade in timber and perhaps a rivalry with the shipbuilders across the water. A single line can seed a family, a region and a conflict.

Real surnames grew the same way, from where people lived, what they did and what others called them. You can lean on that logic to invent more names in the same voice. Mix in contrast on purpose. A dark family in a nation of nature names stands out immediately, and an elven name in a dwarven hold tells the reader someone has travelled. Try the full name with a given name, read it in dialogue, and say it aloud. If players or readers will type the name often, keep apostrophes and unusual letters for a few special families rather than for everyone.
