Indonesian last names region by region
Inherited surnames in Indonesia cluster in particular regions. In North Sumatra, Batak families use clan names such as Siregar, Nasution, Simanjuntak, Sinaga, Hutapea, Lubis and Harahap, which are passed through the father. In North Sulawesi, Minahasan families carry names like Wenas, Lumentut, Sondakh, Rondonuwu, Pangemanan and Mandagi. These names are old, tied to villages and ancestors, and are used proudly in public life, so a single surname often tells other Indonesians exactly where a family comes from.
In Java, the most populous island, surnames were never the norm. Many Javanese people have a single name, as the first two presidents Sukarno and Suharto did, or a set of given names with no family name at all. On official forms and abroad, a Javanese person may repeat a name or use a father's name to fill the surname field. That means the list above leans toward the regions where inherited names are actually part of everyday life.
Maluku, Flores and Chinese-Indonesian families
The islands of Maluku have their own strong surname tradition. Ambonese family names such as Pattinama, Latuconsina, Tuhumury, Pattiasina, Sahetapy, Siwabessy and Leimena are recognised across Indonesia. Many start with Patti or Latu, elements linked to old local titles and lineages. In Flores and parts of Timor, centuries of Portuguese contact left names such as da Costa, Fernandez, Parera and da Silva, which families still carry alongside local names.
Chinese-Indonesian families have a separate history. Under a policy introduced in the late 1960s, many were encouraged to adopt Indonesian sounding names. Families often chose a name that echoed the old Chinese clan name, so Lim became Halim or Salim and Tan became Tanoto or Tanuwijaya. Names like Wijaya, Gunawan, Kurniawan and Santoso became common in these communities. Today some families have returned to Chinese names, while others keep the adopted ones.
Old Dutch spellings and modern spelling reforms
Indonesian spelling changed twice in the twentieth century, and names did not always follow. Under the old Dutch based system, oe was used for the u sound, dj for j, tj for the ch sound and j for y. A reform in 1947 replaced oe with u, and a larger reform in 1972 changed dj to j, tj to c and j to y. That is why the same person can appear as Soekarno or Sukarno in different books.
Many families kept the older spelling because it was how the name was registered, so you will still meet names such as Djojohadikusumo, Soedarmo or Tjokroaminoto. When you look for a name in the list, try both versions if a search comes up empty. The same rule applies to family history research, since an ancestor recorded before 1972 may appear in archives with the older letters.
Frequently asked questions
How are Indonesian last names passed down?
It depends on the community. Batak, Minahasan and Ambonese families pass clan or family names through the father, much like Western surnames. Many Javanese and Sundanese people have no inherited surname at all, and children receive their own given names instead.
Why do some names use oe or dj?
These letters come from the Dutch based spelling used before the reforms of 1947 and 1972. Oe became u, and dj became j. Families often kept the original spelling because it was already on their documents, so both old and new forms are still in use.
Which parts of Indonesia use clan names?
Clan names are strongest among the Batak of North Sumatra, the Minahasa of North Sulawesi and the peoples of Maluku. The Toraja, Nias and several groups in eastern Indonesia also have family or clan names, while most people on Java and Bali do not.
Why did Chinese-Indonesian families change names?
From the late 1960s, a government policy encouraged Chinese-Indonesians to take Indonesian sounding names. Many chose names that kept a link to the old clan name, such as Halim or Salim for Lim. Restrictions eased after 1998, and some families have since returned to Chinese names.
