How Russian last names change for men and women

Most Russian surnames are possessive adjectives, and like adjectives they agree with gender. A man named Ivanov (Иванов) has a sister named Ivanova, and the same pattern turns Petrov into Petrova and Volkov into Volkova. Names ending in -in take -ina, so Pushkin becomes Pushkina. Names ending in -sky or -skoy become -skaya for women, as in Dostoevskaya, and Tolstoy becomes Tolstaya. In English a whole family is usually called the Ivanovs.

Some names do not change at all. Surnames of Ukrainian origin ending in -enko or -ko, such as Shevchenko and Bondarenko, stay the same for everyone, as do Siberian names ending in -ykh or -ikh, such as Chernykh and Sedykh. Names borrowed from other languages, like Müller or Kim, also remain unchanged. Remember too that a full Russian name has three parts: a given name, a patronymic from the father's name and the surname, as in Anna Sergeyevna Ivanova.

    What Russian surnames mean

The endings -ov, -ev and -in originally meant belonging to, so Ivanov is Ivan's, Petrov is Pyotr's and Vasiliev is Vasily's. Many surnames were built on a trade or a nickname instead. Kuznetsov comes from kuznets, the smith, and Popov from pop, a priest. Smirnov, one of the most common names in Russia, comes from smirny, meaning quiet or meek. Animal nicknames are everywhere: Volkov (wolf), Sokolov (falcon), Lebedev (swan), Medvedev (bear) and Kozlov (goat).

Names ending in -sky or -skoy usually point to a place or estate, and they were popular among the gentry, as with Obolensky and Trubetskoy. A separate group came from Orthodox seminaries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, where students were often given new, elegant surnames based on church feasts, virtues or Latin words. That is the origin of names like Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration), Voskresensky (Resurrection) and Rozhdestvensky (Nativity), which still sound faintly clerical to Russian ears.

A short history, with tips for writers

Boyars and merchants used surnames early, but many Russian peasants had no fixed family name until the nineteenth century and were recorded by a patronymic or a village nickname. After the emancipation of the serfs in 1861, surnames were recorded more systematically, often taken from the name of a father or grandfather, or from a former landowner. By the time the Soviet Union introduced internal passports in the 1930s, almost everyone had a fixed surname.

For a believable character, pair a common given name with a common surname. Ivanov, Smirnov, Kuznetsov, Popov and Sokolov are the Russian equivalent of Smith or Jones. For an old aristocratic family, choose a name ending in -sky or a princely name such as Volkonsky or Golitsyn. Use the correct female form, since readers who know Russian will notice a woman called Anna Petrov, and remember that close friends would call her by a diminutive such as Anya.

    Frequently asked questions

Which Russian last names are the most common?

Smirnov is usually listed as the most common surname in Russia, followed by Ivanov, Kuznetsov, Popov, Vasiliev, Petrov and Sokolov. Each has a female form ending in -a, so Smirnova, Ivanova and Kuznetsova are just as common.

Why do Russian surnames end in -ov or -ova?

The -ov ending is a possessive suffix, so Ivanov originally meant Ivan's son or Ivan's family. Because Russian adjectives agree with gender, the name takes -ova for women. The same logic applies to -ev and -eva, and to -in and -ina.

Why do some Russian names have no female form?

Surnames of Ukrainian origin ending in -enko, Siberian names ending in -ykh or -ikh, and most foreign names do not change for gender. Olga Shevchenko and Pavel Shevchenko share exactly the same spelling, and so do a brother and sister named Chernykh.

    What is a Russian patronymic?

It is a middle name made from the father's given name. Sons add -ovich or -evich and daughters add -ovna or -evna, so the children of Sergei are Ivan Sergeyevich and Anna Sergeyevna. Using the given name and patronymic together is the polite way to address someone.
