Common Ukrainian last names and the trades behind them

Crafts dominate the top of the list. Shevchenko (Шевченко) comes from shvets, shoemaker, Kovalenko from koval, smith, Bondarenko from bondar, cooper, and Tkachenko from tkach, weaver. Kravchenko is from kravets, tailor, and Ponomarenko from ponomar, a church sexton. Melnyk means miller, Oliynyk oil presser and Kushnir furrier. The same trade often appears in several forms, so the tailor gives Kravets, Kravchenko and Kravchuk, and the weaver gives Tkach, Tkachenko and Tkachuk.

Other top names come from nicknames, places and first names. Boyko suggests a lively fighter, Moroz means frost and Lysenko comes from lysyi, bald. Rudenko points to red hair. Polishchuk means a man from Polissia, the wooded north, and Mazur someone from Mazovia in Poland. Savchenko, Petrenko, Marchenko and Pavlenko come from the given names Sava, Petro, Marko and Pavlo. Kolomiyets points to the town of Kolomyia in the western Carpathian foothills.

Regional patterns from east to west

Where a name comes from often shows in its ending. Names in -enko are most typical of central and eastern Ukraine, the old Cossack lands around Poltava, Cherkasy, Kyiv and Kharkiv. The register of the Zaporozhian Host, compiled in 1649, already lists many soldiers with -enko names. Names in -chuk and -uk cluster in the west and northwest, in Volhynia and Podillia, giving Kovalchuk, Martynyuk, Havrylyuk and Pavlyuk. Galicia adds endings like -yshyn and -yak.

Some of the strongest names carry no ending at all. Moroz, Bondar, Kushnir and Mazur were nicknames or trade words that became fixed as they stood. Cossack records are full of these colourful nicknames, and many families still carry them. The mix of endings in one family tree often reflects migration, since people moved between regions over the centuries. A western -chuk family living in Kharkiv, or an -enko family in Lviv, is entirely normal today.

Searching the list and choosing names

Ukrainian names reach English through several routes, so one name can have several spellings. The official system used on Ukrainian passports gives Oliinyk and Havryliuk, many families write Oliynyk and Havrylyuk, and older Russian-based spellings give Oleinik and Gavrilyuk. The Ukrainian letter г is written h, so Hryhorenko corresponds to the Russian-style Grigorenko. Families who emigrated before the Second World War often used Polish or German spellings, such as Kowalczuk. If a name seems missing, try h for g and y for i.

For a character, let region guide the ending. Someone from Poltava or Chernihiv could be a Lysenko or Marchenko, while a family from Lviv or Ternopil might be Havrylyuk or Kovalyshyn. The large Ukrainian communities in Canada, especially Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, often kept spellings from early 20th-century Austro-Hungarian records. A Canadian Ukrainian name like Kowalchuk may therefore look different from the same name written in Kyiv today.

    Frequently asked questions

Which Ukrainian last names come from trades?

Many of the best known do. Shevchenko (shoemaker), Kovalenko (smith), Bondarenko (cooper), Tkachenko (weaver), Kravchenko (tailor) and Melnyk (miller) all name a craft. The ending shows the family link, so -enko and -chuk both suggest the son or descendant of that craftsman.

Why do eastern and western names end differently?

Different endings spread in different regions. The -enko form became typical in the Cossack lands of central and eastern Ukraine, while -chuk, -uk and -yshyn were more usual in Volhynia, Podillia and Galicia. Migration has mixed them, but the pattern is still visible.

Why is the same name spelled with H or G?

Ukrainian uses the letter г for a sound close to English h, while Russian uses the same letter for g. Names that reached English through Russian documents were often written with g, so Hryhorenko appears as Grigorenko. The H spelling follows Ukrainian pronunciation.

Is Shevchenko linked to the poet Taras Shevchenko?

Taras Shevchenko is Ukraine's national poet, and his name is honoured across the country. The surname itself is very common, though, because it simply means son of a shoemaker. Most people named Shevchenko are not related to him.
