Serbian last names from trades and Ottoman words

Some of the most interesting names describe work. Kovačević is the son of a smith and Popović the son of a priest, since Orthodox parish priests could marry. Several trade names come from Turkish words adopted during Ottoman rule. Kujundžić comes from kujundžija, a goldsmith, Terzić from terzija, a tailor, Kalajdžić from kalajdžija, a tinsmith, Samardžić from samardžija, a maker of pack saddles, and Ćurčić from ćurčija, a furrier.

These borrowed trade words show how everyday language in Serbia absorbed Turkish vocabulary over several centuries. The ending -džija marked a craftsman, and adding -ić turned it into a family name. Many of these names are now more common in towns than villages, since crafts were concentrated in market centres. When you meet a name with dž in the middle, it is worth checking whether a Turkish trade is hiding inside it.

    Nicknames, colours and animal names

Nicknames are another rich source. Belić comes from beo, white, and Bjelić from its variant bijel. Vuković comes from vuk, wolf, a name once given to protect a child. Sokolović comes from the falcon and Zečević from zec, the hare. Physical traits appear too, as in Grbić, from grba, a hump, or Ćosić, from ćosa, a beardless man. Knowing a few Serbian words makes many names instantly readable.

Given names are the base for the largest group of surnames. Jovanović, Petrović, Nikolić, Marković, Đorđević, Stojanović, Ilić and Pavlović all build on a first name plus -ović or -ević. In Vojvodina and southeastern Serbia you also meet shorter forms ending in -ov, -ev or -in, such as Popov or Stankov, which reflect neighbouring languages and older local habits. These are still Serbian names, just with a regional flavour.

Clans, migrations and names that changed

Surnames in Serbia became fixed relatively late, mostly during the nineteenth century as the modern state began keeping records. Before then a man might be known by his father's name, and his son by his own, so the surname shifted each generation. In Montenegro and Herzegovina, families belonged to larger brotherhoods, or bratstva, and several related surnames could share one clan origin.

Large migrations, both northward from Ottoman lands and between regions, also shaped surnames. A family that moved might take a new name based on its old home, such as Hercegovac for someone from Herzegovina. If you are researching a Serbian family, look at church records and ask which slava the family celebrates, as a shared patron saint can support a link between two families with different surnames.

    Frequently asked questions

Which Serbian last names are most common?

Jovanović, Petrović, Nikolić, Marković, Đorđević, Stojanović, Ilić, Stanković, Pavlović and Milošević are usually listed near the top. All of them are built from a given name plus -ović or -ević, showing how central patronymic origins are in Serbia.

    What does Popović mean?

Popović means son of the priest, from pop, a word for an Orthodox priest. Because Serbian Orthodox parish priests could marry and have children, many families descended from priests, and the name became very common across Serbia and the wider region.

Why do some names contain Turkish words?

During centuries of Ottoman rule, many Turkish words entered everyday Serbian, especially for crafts and trades. Names such as Kujundžić, from a goldsmith, and Terzić, from a tailor, combine a Turkish trade word with the Serbian ending -ić.

    How do I pronounce đ, ć and č?

Č sounds like the ch in church, while ć is a softer ch, closer to the t in the British tune. Đ is similar to the j in jam but softer, and dž is a harder j. Š sounds like sh and ž like the s in pleasure.
