Where African American surnames come from
Enslaved people in the United States were usually recorded only by a given name, if at all, and any surname they used was rarely acknowledged in law. After emancipation in 1865, freedpeople chose surnames for themselves and registered them in labor contracts, marriage records and Freedmen's Bureau files. The 1870 census was the first federal count to list most formerly enslaved people by full name, which is why it is a key starting point for Black family history.
The choices varied. Some families kept the surname of a former enslaver because it connected relatives who had been sold apart, while others deliberately rejected it. Many took names of admired figures, which is one reason Washington, Jefferson and Jackson are so common. Others chose English names already familiar in their communities, such as Smith, Johnson and Brown, and some chose names that spoke to their new status, such as Freeman.
The African American last name generator and Census data
The names in this generator come from surnames that the US Census Bureau reports as most common among Black Americans. Williams, Johnson, Smith, Jones, Brown, Jackson and Davis are near the top, and they are also common among white Americans. A smaller set has a much higher share of Black bearers. Washington is the clearest example, with a large majority of people carrying it identifying as Black, followed by names such as Jefferson, Booker, Banks and Mosley.
Each result shows the surname with its linguistic origin and meaning, and most of these names are English, Scottish or Irish in origin. Jackson means son of Jack, Banks refers to someone who lived by a slope or riverbank, and Booker was a scribe or bookbinder. The history of who carried a name in America is often richer than its European etymology, so read the meaning alongside the history above.
Migration, faith and names chosen with purpose
The Great Migration, from about 1910 to 1970, carried millions of Black Southerners to Chicago, Detroit, New York, Los Angeles and other cities, and their surnames went with them. A character named Mosley in Chicago may well have grandparents from Mississippi. The twentieth century also brought new names. Members of the Nation of Islam replaced surnames they regarded as imposed by slavery with X, and later with Arabic names such as Muhammad, Shabazz and Ali.
In the 1960s and 1970s, some people adopted African or Arabic names as an expression of identity, and names such as Karenga, Baraka and Toure entered American families. Recent immigration from Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia and the Caribbean has added more. When you name a Black American character, match the surname to the family's history and region, pair it with a first name that fits their generation, and never treat a name as shorthand for a stereotype.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a black last name generator?
It covers the same need. The surnames here are those most common among Black Americans according to Census data, shown with origin and meaning. Many are shared with other Americans, which reflects real history. For names from specific African countries, use the African or Nigerian generators on this site.
What is the most common African American surname?
Williams is the most common surname among Black Americans in recent Census counts, followed closely by Johnson, Smith, Jones and Brown. Washington has the highest share of Black bearers of any common surname, which is why it is often described as the most distinctively African American name.
Why do many African Americans have English or Scottish surnames?
Because most freedpeople chose or kept surnames already used in the American South, which were largely English, Scottish and Irish. Some names came from former enslavers, others from public figures or neighbors, and others were chosen freely. The surname therefore reflects American history more than European ancestry.
How can I use the African American last name generator for genealogy?
Use it to learn the origin and spread of a family name, then move to records. The 1870 census, Freedmen's Bureau files and Freedman's Savings Bank records are the main sources for tracing families across emancipation. Surnames sometimes changed between 1865 and 1880, so check spelling variants and alternative names.
