How the tria nomina worked
A male Roman citizen of the late Republic usually had three names, the tria nomina. The praenomen was a personal name chosen from a short list, such as Gaius, Lucius, Marcus, Publius, Quintus or Titus. The nomen was the family or clan name, the gens, and almost always ended in -ius: Julius, Cornelius, Claudius, Valerius. The cognomen came last and began as a nickname that later passed down a branch of the family, like Caesar, Cicero or Scipio.
Cognomina are where Roman names get personal. Cicero means chickpea, Naso nose, Rufus red-haired, Brutus dull and Scipio staff. Some men added an agnomen for a great achievement, as Publius Cornelius Scipio became Africanus after defeating Carthage. Official names also included filiation and tribe, so a full inscription might read Marcus Tullius Marci filius Cornelia Cicero, meaning Marcus Tullius Cicero, son of Marcus, of the Cornelian voting tribe.
Names for women, freedmen and new citizens
Roman women usually had no personal first name in the male sense. A daughter took the feminine form of her father's nomen, so the daughters of a Julius were all Julia and the daughter of Cicero was Tullia. Sisters were told apart with words like Maior, elder, and Minor, younger, or numbers such as Tertia, third. Later, women often added a cognomen of their own, as with Caecilia Metella or Livia Drusilla. The nomina in the results work for women if you change -ius to -ia.
Freed slaves took the praenomen and nomen of their former owner and kept their original name as a cognomen, so Cicero's secretary Tiro became Marcus Tullius Tiro. Provincials who gained citizenship often took the nomen of the official or emperor who granted it, which is why Julius, Claudius and Flavius spread across the empire. After Caracalla extended citizenship to most free inhabitants in 212, huge numbers of new citizens became Aurelius, after the emperor's own nomen.
Building a name with the Roman last name generator
Start with the nomen, since it fixes the family. The common setting leans toward famous gentes such as Julius, Cornelius and Claudius, while the less common settings surface gentes like Sempronius, Licinius or Vipsanius, which feel authentic without the instant recognition of Julius or Claudius. Then pick a cognomen whose meaning suits the character: Severus for a stern magistrate, Felix for a lucky merchant, Crassus for a heavy one. Finally add a praenomen, and use the first name preview to see the whole name together.
Check the period before you commit. Under the Republic many plebeian men, including Gaius Marius, had no cognomen at all, and patrician gentes such as the Cornelii, Fabii and Julii outranked newer plebeian families. In the imperial era the cognomen became the name people actually used, and the praenomen faded. A soldier in the second century might be Titus Flavius Maximus, while a senator in 63 BC could be Lucius Sergius Catilina. Mixing eras is the most common mistake in Roman fiction.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a nomen and a cognomen?
The nomen is the clan name shared by everyone in a gens, such as Julius or Cornelius. The cognomen came after it and identified a branch of that clan, often starting as a nickname. In Gaius Julius Caesar, Julius is the nomen and Caesar the cognomen.
Is a Latin last name generator the same as a Roman one?
For practical purposes, yes. Roman family names were Latin words or Latinized forms of Etruscan and other Italic names, so a list of real nomina and cognomina covers both searches. Modern surnames that come from Latin, such as many Italian or Spanish ones, are a separate topic.
Can I use the Roman last name generator for female characters?
Yes. Take a nomen from the results and change the ending from -ius to -ia, so Valerius becomes Valeria and Cornelius becomes Cornelia. For a second daughter add Minor or Secunda, and from the late Republic onward you can add a cognomen for extra detail.
How many names did a Roman citizen have?
A male citizen of the late Republic typically had three, the praenomen, nomen and cognomen, and sometimes a fourth, the agnomen, for an honour or an adoption. Early Romans often had only two, and many people in the later empire were known mainly by a single name.
