Initials, given names and the missing surname

Traditional Tamil naming does not use a family surname in the European sense. A person has a given name, preceded by an initial that stands for the father's given name, and sometimes a second initial for the home town. A man named Karthik whose father is Ramasamy writes his name as R. Karthik. His son might become K. Arun, taking Karthik as the new initial. The name shifts every generation, which is why forms in Tamil Nadu often ask for the initial in a separate box.

This system runs into trouble abroad, where passports and visa forms demand a surname. The usual answer is to expand the initial, so R. Karthik becomes Karthik Ramasamy and his father's given name now works as a surname. In Singapore, Malaysia, Canada and the UK, children often keep that name, turning it into a fixed family surname within one or two generations. Many results from the generator are names of exactly this kind, such as Ramasamy, Subramaniam, Krishnan or Murugan.

Caste titles and the Dravidian movement

Some Tamil families historically added a caste title after the given name, such as Pillai, Mudaliar, Iyer, Iyengar, Chettiar, Nadar or Thevar. These titles named a community or traditional occupation and were widely used in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In Sri Lanka and among older emigrant families, some of them hardened into fixed surnames and still appear on documents today. A few are included in the generator, each with a short factual note on where it comes from.

From the 1920s, the Self-Respect Movement led by E. V. Ramasamy, known as Periyar, urged people to drop caste titles, and the wider Dravidian movement made this a public cause. Many Tamils in Tamil Nadu stopped using them, and in the late 1970s the state government ordered caste suffixes removed from street names. As a result, a modern Tamil name is far more likely to be a given name plus a patronymic than a caste title. For a contemporary character from Chennai, the patronymic style is the realistic choice.

Finding names with the Tamil last name generator

Most Tamil names used as surnames began as given names, and many come from religion or classical Tamil. Murugan, Kandasamy and Subramaniam all refer to the god Murugan. Sivakumar and Sivalingam relate to Shiva, while Srinivasan and Venkatesan relate to Vishnu.
