Why so many Vietnamese share one surname

Vietnam has a remarkably small pool of family names. Nguyễn alone is carried by something like four in ten people, and a dozen or so names, including Trần, Lê, Phạm, Hoàng, Huỳnh, Phan, Vũ, Võ, Đặng, Bùi, Đỗ and Ngô, cover most of the rest. A tool that only offered common names would repeat itself constantly, which is why the rare setting here is worth using.

The concentration has historical causes. When a dynasty fell, families connected to it sometimes took the new ruling surname to avoid persecution, and ordinary people adopted the royal name to show loyalty or gain favour. The Nguyễn lords and later the Nguyễn dynasty ruled until 1945, which spread the name further. Naming taboos also changed spellings: Hoàng became Huỳnh and Vũ became Võ in the south because the original forms echoed the names of rulers.

Name order, middle names and diacritics

A Vietnamese name is written family name first, then a middle name, then the given name. In Nguyễn Văn An, Nguyễn is the surname, Văn is the middle name and An is the given name. People are addressed by the given name with a kinship term or title, so colleagues call him Anh An and his students would say Thầy An, never Mr Nguyễn. Traditionally Văn marked boys and Thị marked girls, though modern parents choose far more varied middle names.

The diacritics are part of the spelling, not decoration. Vietnamese is tonal, and marks such as the tilde on Nguyễn and the dot under Phạm tell a reader how the syllable is pronounced. Many surnames also have Sino-Vietnamese roots with a written Chinese form: Lý corresponds to the character for plum, and Hoàng to the character for yellow. Outside Vietnam the marks are often dropped, which is why the diaspora writes Nguyen, Tran and Pham.

A family in Hà Nội might favour different middle names from one in Huế or Sài Gòn, and northern families write Hoàng where southern families write Huỳnh.
