What the most common Czech surnames mean
The most common Czech surnames read like a snapshot of village life. Novák means newcomer, Svoboda a free man rather than a serf, Novotný the new one and Dvořák a man who worked on a manor estate, a dvůr. Colour and appearance names are just as common: Černý means black, Kučera curly-haired and Malý small. Horák is a highlander, Procházka a wanderer and Němec a German, a reminder of the long shared history of Czechs and Germans in Bohemia.
Trades give Kovář, smith, Mlynář, miller, and Sedláček, small farmer. The endings -ek, -ík and -ček are diminutives, so Havlíček is little Havel and Sedláček is the little farmer. Many names come from Christian first names: Beneš from Benedikt, Havel from Gallus, Pavlík from Pavel. Czech spelling uses the háček and čárka marks, and they matter. Dvořák loses its distinctive ř sound when written Dvorak, which is how many emigrant families ended up spelling it.
How feminine -ová forms work in Czech
Czech surnames are gendered. For most noun-type names, a woman's form adds -ová: Novák becomes Nováková, Svoboda becomes Svobodová and Dvořák becomes Dvořáková. Some names drop a vowel first, so Havel becomes Havlová and Marek becomes Marková. Adjective-type names ending in -ý switch to -á instead, which is why Černý becomes Černá and Novotný becomes Novotná. A wife and daughter share the feminine form, while the husband and son keep the masculine one.
Since 2022 Czech law has allowed any woman to register the masculine form of her surname if she prefers, so a modern Czech woman might be Jana Novák rather than Jana Nováková. Most still use -ová. Internationally, the feminine form often travels without its accents, as with the tennis players Martina Navratilova and Petra Kvitova. When a result appears in its masculine form, use these rules to build the feminine version for any female character in your story.
Choosing a name with the Czech last name generator
Think about where the family comes from. Bohemia and Moravia share most surnames, but border regions have many German names in Czech spelling, such as Šmíd from Schmidt or Vágner from Wagner. A Prague family with a German-sounding name might have roots in the old German-speaking middle class, while a village family in Moravia is more likely to carry a plain Czech trade name or nickname. Use the length filter if you need a short name like Malý or a long one like Procházka.
Czech stress always falls on the first syllable, which makes most surnames easy to say once you know it: NO-vahk, SVO-bo-da. The letter ř is the hard one for English speakers, so a name like Dvořák or Řezníček will be mispronounced abroad. That can be a useful detail in a story about emigrants. Pair results with Czech first names such as Jan, Petr, Tereza or Lucie in the first name preview to check the rhythm before you settle on a name.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make the feminine form of a name from the Czech last name generator?
Add -ová to most names, dropping a mobile e where needed, so Novák becomes Nováková and Marek becomes Marková. Adjective-type names ending in -ý change to -á, so Černý becomes Černá and Veselý becomes Veselá. Names that already end in -ová are feminine forms.
What does the surname Novák mean?
Novák means newcomer, someone new to a village or estate. It is the most common surname in the Czech Republic, and related forms appear across the Slavic world, including Nowak in Poland and Novak in Slovenia and Croatia. The feminine Czech form is Nováková.
Why do Czech surnames have so many accent marks?
Czech uses the háček to mark sounds like č, š, ž and ř, and the čárka to mark long vowels such as á and é. The ring on ů is another long vowel. These marks change pronunciation and meaning, so keep them whenever you write a name in a Czech setting.
Do Czech women still have to use the -ová ending?
No. Since 2022 Czech women can choose the masculine form of their surname without giving a reason. In practice most Czech women still use -ová or -á, so it remains the natural choice for a Czech character unless you want to make a point about the change.
