Flemish and Walloon: two traditions in one country
Belgium sits on the line between Germanic and Romance Europe, and its surnames show it. In Flanders, the Dutch-speaking north, most names are Flemish: Peeters, Janssens, Maes, Jacobs, Mertens and Willems all come from given names, usually with a genitive -s meaning son of. In Wallonia, the French-speaking south, you meet Dubois, Lambert, Dupont and Leclercq, which look French but often carry local Walloon or Picard spellings. Brussels mixes both, and German-speaking families around Eupen add names like Schmitz and Kessler.
Many Flemish surnames describe where a family lived or what it did. Van den Broeck means from the marsh, Van Damme from the dam, De Smet the smith and De Backer the baker. Walloon names do the same in French form: Dumont from the hill, Delvaux from the valleys, Lemaire the mayor. When you generate a list, the meaning next to each result tells you which language a name belongs to, which matters if your character grew up in Ghent rather than Liège.
Why Van and De are capitalised in Belgium
One detail trips up writers more than any other. In the Netherlands, a prefix like van or de is written in lower case when a first name comes before it, so Dutch style gives Pieter van Dijk. In Belgium the prefix is part of the surname itself and keeps its capital letter every time: Jan Van Damme, Els De Wilde. Belgian civil registers often fused the parts as well, which is why Vandenberghe, Vanderstraeten and Devos appear as single words beside the separated forms.
The result is that one name can be spelled several ways by families who are not related at all. Van den Broeck, Vandenbroeck and Van Den Broek all exist, each fixed by a clerk's choice generations ago. When you pick a result, keep its spelling consistent throughout your project and think about how it is alphabetised. Belgian school lists and directories usually file Van Damme under V rather than under D, another quiet difference from Dutch practice.
Using the Belgian last name generator for characters
Start with the region. A family from Antwerp or Bruges should carry a Flemish name, while a family from Namur or Charleroi should carry a French or Walloon one. Use the starts with filter and type Van or De to get a set of prefixed Flemish names, or Du and Le for Walloon ones. The ends with filter helps too: -ens and -aerts give strongly Flemish results such as Janssens and Govaerts, while -ier and -ard lean French.
Then add a first name in the preview box. Flemish families favour names like Lotte, Wout, Jef or Lien, while Walloon families might choose Amélie, Julien or Thibault. A mixed pairing like Julien Peeters is realistic for Brussels, where marriages across the language line are common. Save the names you like, share a link with a co-writer, or download the list as a TXT file with each meaning attached for your notes.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Belgian last name generator include both Flemish and French names?
Yes. The dataset covers hundreds of real Belgian surnames from Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels. Each result shows its meaning, so you can tell that a name like Maes is Flemish while a name like Delvaux is Walloon, and choose the one that fits your character's home region.
What are the most common surnames in Belgium?
Peeters and Janssens usually top the national lists, followed by Maes, Jacobs, Mertens, Willems and Claes, all Flemish. Frequent Walloon names include Dubois, Lambert, Dupont and Martin. The common setting favours names like these, while the rare setting brings up more regional ones.
Should I write Van Damme or van Damme?
For a Belgian, write Van Damme with a capital V in every position. Capitalising the prefix is standard Belgian practice, because the prefix counts as part of the surname. Lower case van is the Dutch convention and would suggest a character from the Netherlands instead.
Are these real Belgian surnames?
Yes. They are genuine family names found in Belgian records, not invented ones. Because each is shared by many unrelated families, you can use them freely for fiction, games or genealogy notes. For a specific real family, check civil records, since spellings can vary even between cousins.
