Comparing al-, ibn, -zadeh, -yan and -oğlu
Each language in the region has its own way of saying son of or belonging to. In Arabic, ibn or bin means son of, as in Bin Laden or Ibn Khaldun, and the article al- turns a tribe or place into a surname, as in al-Masri, the Egyptian, or al-Baghdadi, from Baghdad. Persian uses the ending -i in the same way, as in Tehrani or Shirazi, and the ending -zadeh, meaning born of, as in Hosseinzadeh or Mirzadeh.
Turkish uses -oğlu, meaning son of, as in Karaoğlu or Hasanoğlu, while Armenian uses -yan or -ian, meaning of or descendant of, as in Petrosyan or Hovhannisian. Hebrew uses Ben, son of, as in Ben-David, while Cohen and Levi mark descent from priestly and Levite families. Once you know these markers, a surname often tells you at a glance which language and community it comes from. The generator's ends with filter makes it easy to pull out any one pattern.
When surnames became law in the region
Fixed surnames are a recent development in much of the Middle East. Iran introduced compulsory civil registration with surnames in the 1920s under Reza Shah, and many families chose names based on a home town, an occupation or an admired quality. Turkey's Surname Law of 1934 required every citizen to adopt a Turkish surname, and families picked names such as Yılmaz (unyielding), Öztürk (pure Turk) and Demir (iron), which are now among the most common in the country.
In Israel, many immigrants replaced European surnames with Hebrew ones, a practice that spread after 1948, and David Grün had already become David Ben-Gurion decades earlier. In much of the Arab world, including Iraq and the Gulf, people still commonly use a chain of given names, with a tribal or family name added on official records. Armenian surnames generally took shape earlier, many by the eighteenth or nineteenth century, and families in the diaspora often kept them unchanged in France, Lebanon, the United States and elsewhere.
Using the Middle Eastern last name generator
The Middle East is not a single culture, so decide which country and community a character belongs to before you pick a name. A Lebanese Christian family, an Iranian family from Isfahan and a Turkish family from Izmir will all carry very different surnames. The meaning beside each result shows which language a name comes from. The rare setting brings up less familiar names, which can help avoid the handful of surnames readers have already seen many times.
For a mixed cast, such as a newsroom in Dubai or a university in Istanbul, let the generator run across all traditions and then check each result's origin. The first name preview lets you test combinations such as Leila Shirazi, Omar al-Tamimi or Ani Petrosyan. Filter by starting letter or ending to build a consistent set, then save your list, share a link or download a TXT file with the meanings included for later reference.
Frequently asked questions
Which languages does the Middle Eastern last name generator cover?
It mixes Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Jewish and Armenian surnames, plus Iraqi names, including Kurdish and Assyrian ones. Each result is shown with its meaning so you can see which tradition it comes from. Use the ends with filter to focus on a single pattern such as -zadeh or -yan.
What is the difference between ibn, bin and Ben?
All three mean son of. Ibn is the classical Arabic form, bin is a common spoken and written variant, especially in the Gulf, and Ben is the Hebrew equivalent. In North Africa, Ben is also used by Muslim Arabic speakers, as in Benjelloun.
Why do so many Armenian surnames end in -yan or -ian?
The ending means of or descendant of, so Petrosyan means descendant of Petros. The spelling -yan is standard in Armenia, while -ian is more common in the diaspora, especially in families whose names were first written in French or English.
When did Turks and Iranians adopt surnames?
Iran made surnames compulsory in the 1920s under Reza Shah, and Turkey passed its Surname Law in 1934. In both countries, many families chose surnames at that time based on places, occupations or personal qualities, which is why so many surnames there are recent and descriptive.
