Tremblay, Gagnon and the founding families of Québec
French Canadian surnames are unusually concentrated because New France was settled by a small number of immigrants, perhaps ten thousand in total, most of them from northwestern France in the 1600s and early 1700s. Their descendants multiplied fast. Tremblay, the most common name in Québec, goes back largely to one man, Pierre Tremblay, who arrived from the Perche region around 1647. Gagnon, Roy, Côté, Bouchard, Gauthier, Morin and Lavoie follow close behind.
Many names describe the land or a trade in old French. Tremblay means a place where aspen trees grow, and Gagnon may refer to a watchdog or to farmed land. Côté means side or hillside, Fortin is a little strong one, and Lavoie means the way or road. Pelletier was a fur dealer, Boulanger a baker and Lévesque a nickname meaning the bishop, perhaps for someone who worked in a bishop's household.
The dit names: a second surname
French Canadian records are full of names joined by the word dit, meaning called: Paquet dit Lavallée or Brunet dit Létang. A dit name was a second surname added to tell apart branches of a large family, to mark a soldier's nickname, or to recall a place of origin. Soldiers in the colonial army received noms de guerre like Lajoie, Sanschagrin (without sorrow) and Jolicoeur, and many of these became family names.
Over time, many branches dropped the original name and kept the dit name, or switched between them from one record to the next. That is why genealogists researching French Canadian families always check both. A family recorded as Paquet dit Lavallée in one century might appear only as Lavallée in the next, and some who moved to New England translated the name again into English.
Tips for the French Canadian last name generator
For a realistic Québécois setting, start with the common names. In a Saguenay town it can seem that half the phone book is Tremblay, with Gagnon, Bouchard and Simard close behind. Use the rare setting for names that point to a single region or family, and look out for dit-derived names like Sansoucy, Jolicoeur and Vadeboncoeur, which give a character an instant sense of colonial history.
Accents matter: Côté, Lévesque and Bélanger lose their character without them. If your character is a Franco-American in Maine or Massachusetts, consider a translated or anglicized form instead. Add a first name like Mathieu, Geneviève, Luc or Chantal to preview the full name, filter by ends with ier, eau or ette for classic French endings, and copy or download the list once it feels right.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common French Canadian last name?
Tremblay is the most common surname in Québec, especially in the Saguenay and Lac-Saint-Jean region. It is followed by Gagnon, Roy, Côté and Bouchard. Most Tremblays descend from a single settler, Pierre Tremblay, who arrived from France in the 1640s.
What does dit mean in a French Canadian name?
Dit means called. A dit name was an extra surname used to tell branches of a family apart, record a soldier's nickname or note a place of origin. In many families the dit name eventually replaced the original, so a name like Lavallée or Lajoie can hide an older surname.
Does the French Canadian last name generator include Acadian names?
It focuses on Québécois surnames from the settlers of New France along the St. Lawrence. Acadian names like LeBlanc and Landry overlap in some cases, but for Louisiana spellings like Boudreaux and Thibodeaux, the Cajun last name generator on this site is a better fit.
Why do some French Canadian families in the US have English names?
Between the 1840s and 1930s, close to a million French Canadians moved to New England to work in mills and factories. Many translated or anglicized their surnames to fit in, so Boisvert became Greenwood, Leblanc became White and Roy became King.
