From clan and lineage to Russian endings

Before the twentieth century, Kazakhs did not use fixed surnames. A person was identified by a given name and a father's name, and by membership in a clan within one of the three zhuz: the Senior, Middle and Junior. Knowing your paternal ancestors back seven generations, a custom called zheti ata, was a social expectation and still matters to many families. Clan and lineage, not a family name, were how Kazakhs placed one another.

Under Russian imperial and then Soviet administration, Kazakhs were registered with Russian-style surnames. The usual method was to take the father's or grandfather's given name and add -ov or -ev for men, -ova or -eva for women. A man whose grandfather was called Nazarbay became Nazarbayev, and a woman in the same family Nazarbayeva. Tokayev, Suleimenov, Abdrakhmanov and Kunayev all follow this pattern. Most Kazakhs alive today still carry surnames built this way.

The shift to -uly and -kyzy

Since independence in 1991, a growing number of Kazakhs have dropped the Russian ending in favour of native Kazakh forms. The suffix -uly means son of and -kyzy means daughter of. A man named Serik whose father is Nurlan might register as Serik Nurlanuly, and his sister as Aigerim Nurlankyzy. Kazakh law allows citizens to use these forms, and they are especially popular among younger people and in the Kazakh-speaking south and west of the country.

There is also a middle path. Some families simply drop -ov or -ev and keep the root, so Zhumabayev becomes Zhumabay. Others keep the Soviet form for continuity or convenience, since changing a surname means changing every document. As a result, one family may include a grandfather named Akhmetov, a father named Akhmetov and a daughter named Dana Serikkyzy. Tips for the Kazakh last name generator

Most Kazakh surname roots are given names, and those names carry clear meanings. Many come from Turkic words for strength, animals or nature: Temir means iron, Arystan means lion and Aibek combines ai, moon, with bek, lord. Others arrived from Arabic and Persian through Islam, such as Akhmet, Kassym and Suleimen. The element -bay, meaning rich man or master, appears in Zhumabay and Nazarbay. The meaning beside each result tells you which root a surname is built on.

Type ov or ev into the ends with box to narrow the list, then add -a for a woman or swap in -uly or -kyzy for the modern style. Each result appears in Kazakh Cyrillic, still the everyday script even though the country is moving towards a Latin alphabet, and English spellings vary, so Zhumabayev may also be written Jumabaev.
