What the -yan and -ian ending means

Most Armenian surnames end in -yan or -ian, a suffix that marks belonging or descent, much like the English son or the Scottish Mac. Petrosyan means descendant of Petros, Hovhannisyan descendant of Hovhannes, the Armenian form of John, and Grigoryan descendant of Grigor. The ancestor named in the surname is often a great-grandfather or someone even earlier, the head of the household when the family name first became fixed in written records during the nineteenth century.

Not every root is a personal name. Darbinyan comes from darbin, blacksmith, and Aslanyan from a word for lion. Religious names are common too: Karapetyan comes from Karapet, the Armenian title of John the Baptist. The prefix Ter- marks descent from a married parish priest, as in Ter-Petrosyan. Older genitive endings such as -ents and -unts survive in some southern regions and in names recorded before the -yan form spread across the Armenian world.

Eastern and Western Armenian spellings compared

Armenian has two standard forms. Eastern Armenian is used in Armenia and among Armenians of Iran and Russia, and it usually writes the ending as -yan. Western Armenian descends from the speech of Ottoman Armenians, and most families in Lebanon, Syria, France and the United States use -ian. The two varieties also shifted certain consonants in opposite directions, so the same name can look quite different depending on where the family lived over the last century.

A Lebanese Armenian from Bourj Hammoud might carry a Turkish trade name. These details signal history to readers who know the community, and they cost you nothing to get right.

Armenian surnames do not change for gender, so a brother and sister are both Hovsepyan, and a married woman has traditionally taken her husband's surname unchanged.
